Tantra Theater in Black and White

 The following fun photos are from the Tantra Theater show in downtown San Diego on May 15th. Featuring: Shawn Roop, Joy, Michael McClure, Rita Mooney and Me: Kamala Devi (I'm the one holding my etheric lingam.) Every show is completely new and unique but this show was especially unique for two distinct reasons, it was our first strictly improvisational show (we usually mix scripted personal narrative with improv.) and it was a graduation for Joy (who is one of the tantra theater pioneers) All of the players in these photos are visionaries who've been developing their craft for almost two years now.

For this show, we took audience suggestions and personal stories about taboos such as: Stranger Sex, Moon Time, Shamanic Journeying and lingam lore. We then put audience stories onstage and watched it unfold in unlikely and empowering circumstances. For example, here is a picture of Rita and Kamala celebrating their "moon time" by bleeding into mamma Earth.

This new type of drama is transformative for the players, the audience, and collective consciousness. The best part is that everyone is laughing so hard, the personal growth becomes (mostly) painless!

Spotlight on Healing: Soul Memory

     I've tried a plethera of holistic/spiritual healing modalities in my life. I talk to crystals, I get high off reiki, I orgasm during shamanic trances, I even enjoy being a pin cushin at my weekly acupuncture sessions. But I recently discovered a unique healing modality that totally takes the cake. It's called, Soul Memory Discovery Process.
      Ellen is a wise and pleasant Jewish elder that was recommended to me by one of my tantra theater players. She sat me down in her little office in La Costa and used a Quartz pendulum to read me like a book. The session left me physically transformed, intellectually intrigued, emotionally expressed and spiritually high. It's too soon to see the long term results, as it's only been a few days, but I thought you'd get a kick out of hearing her story: 

Ellen's Story

My name is Ellen Kaufman Dosick, and let me assure you that I am a relatively normal, traditionally-trained professional person. I am a social worker with undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Chicago, and have been a psychotherapist for over 30 years. I have held very "mainline" jobs throughout my career, serving on the faculty of the USC Graduate School of Social Work, and directing programs and offices of social service agencies. My husband is a rabbi and well-known author, and teaches on the faculty of the University of San Diego.

For approximately 20 years, I suffered from a degenerative auto-immune disorder, that by 1989, had progressed to the point where my doctors told me that I probably had only another 5-10 years to live. Some of my systems were beginning to go into crisis, and I was terribly allergic to most foods.

Feeling desperate for some help, and at the prompting of friends, I went to see a woman who looked at past lives as possible sources of current illness. I didn't believe in past lives, but I figured I didn't have anything to lose.

Roni Reynolds - now of blessed memory - and I sat together for a couple of hours that afternoon. It was an intense session, but at the same time, quite delightful. In my closed-mindedness, I still didn't put too much stock in it, and certainly didn't count on any "results." In fact, I forgot about the session, until...

...Six months later, I returned to my doctor for my semi-annual bloodwork. She looked at the results, and was shocked. She couldn't believe what she saw -- all but one of my blood numbers was in the normal range, and that one was only one point outside of "normal." Somehow, in spite of my dismissal of the session with Roni, I was healing!

The work I did with Roni was the seed process, the infant form, of what has grown into the Soul Memory Discovery process. I decided that I needed to learn how to do this work, and studied with Roni.

Over these past 17 years, the Soul Memory Discovery process has emerged and grown itself, and evolved into a technology that is, in many ways, laser-fine. It will continue to evolve into ever finer forms, as Earth and Humankind evolve.

In 1995, I stopped doing "regular" traditional therapy. Soul Memory Discovery is the only work I do now, because in over 5000 sessions, I have found it to be the most effective change tool I have ever come across.

In 1997, I began teaching the Soul Memory Discovery process to other therapists, healers, clergy, and physicians, and there are now over 350 other Soul Memory Discovery facilitators providing this work around the globe.

How Does a Soul Memory Discovery Session Work?


We know that our bodies hold memories of everything that has ever happened to us in this lifetime. All of our experiences in this lifetime are recorded in our physical bodies -- certainly, in our brains -- and also in various organs, muscles, and cells. We know this when we speak about having a "broken heart," or "shouldering a burden."
Just as our bodies hold memories of everything that has happened for us in this lifetime, so our electro-magnetic fields -- our auras -- hold memories of everything that has ever happened for our souls.
If we think of the soul as that eternal part of us that will go on long after we are done with these bodies, then we can imagine that these souls were doing something before they came into these bodies. Our souls come to us, clothed in their own histories, and we carry the memories of those histories in our auric fields.
In the Soul Memory work, when we do a polarity balance, and create sacred space, we are able to access all those memory banks. And the wonderful thing about this is that we can then find the origins of any issue, or complex of symptoms -- be they physical, emotional, spiritual, patterns in our lives, or even entire belief systems.
And once we find the origins of the issue -- which we can easily do in just a few minutes, there is a very simple release process, which lifts those origins out of the system. This process is swift, gentle and sacred. And once the symptoms are no longer being sourced, they dry up and they go away.
All information is accessed through logical "yes-no" questions. And all of this is accomplished in just one session, that is between 2 and 3 hours in length. The changes that take place through a Soul Memory Discovery session are life-enhancing and permanent.

My Thoughs on Dick Dialogues

Thanks for addressing this topic, not only as the next Tantra Theater Program, but also as a life issue.

I have done much to reclaim personal empowerment around my sex and body. The issue for me is the continued oafish nature many offer to men and their genitals. There has been a social joke that's been ongoing around men and their genitals for lifetimes.

The earlier nickname for the male member is a cock, because of the back and forth movement during intercourse, which is said to resemble a male chicken strutting about. The Arabic word for rooster or male chicken is “deek”. Back in the day, Richard was one of the most common names. Richard got shortened to Rick, and Rick turned into Dick. Dick became a sort of "every man"" thing, and sometime around the 1890s some British Army coined the term dick to mean penis, calling recruits “Dicks” or Dick Heads”.

I understand most every man has a penis. So Dick Dialogs could translate to “The Common Man or Everyman Dialog” and cock’s original meaning was "a male bird".

The term was later applied to aggressive people because of the similarity of behavior to the fighting birds. This is where the word "cocky" comes from. Another characteristic of the birds was the upright posture. Because of this, the word came to mean "something that sticks up". This is where we get the expression "cocked ear".

Now Auditioning: Tantra Theater Summer 2010

During last night's rehearsal, one of my troupe members had the courage to share that he was triggered by the language and images that I've been using to promote our next round of Tantra Theater. I admit, I'm not the best graphic designer, and I respect his perspective and know that he is voicing his concerns for the sake of collective healing. Infact, the small but powerful attendance at the last audition suggests that there may have been many people scared off by the topic. As controversial as it may sound, I feel strongly that this work be done.

Why did I choose "Dick Dialogues" when thre are many beautiful terms to describe the penis, lingam, vajra or wand of light...
Well, the title was first suggested to me 8 years ago at a sacred Mexican Hotsprings by author and spiritual teacher, Kelly Bryson. The idea has been alive inside me ever since. Just as Eve Ensler reclaimed the term "Cunt" in Vagina Monologues, I believe there are many new age and tantric men who would benifit from reclaiming the power of their "Dick." I feel strongly about this title, but we need synergy of at least 6 players to create this show. I'm excited we still have one more audition and will go back to the drawing board to better promote the idea. I'm sorry if the condom costume offended anyone, but let me know what you think of this new collage. I hope the above poster expresses the reverence I feel towards the sacred rod.

Auditioning for Tantra Theater's Dick Dialogues

     Below are a few exerpts that were used for cold-readings at tonight's auditions for Tantra Theater's new show: Dick Dialogues. The instructions were to select a piece by just reading the title and do a dramatic interpretation of literature using one prop, but without reading the actual text.

What happened to John Wayne Bobbitt after he got sliced and diced? It's been a long road for John Wayne since 1993, when his Ecuadorian wife, Lorena, took a Ginsa knife to his manhood in the middle of the night, driving off with his severed penis and chucking it in a field. Police managed to retrieve the thing and surgeons re-attached little John to big John. And then John Wayne 'Frankenpenis' Bobbitt's story really began. "Penis Envy"

     Penis Envy is a common term coined by Freud, it's a real psychological complex, where women grow up and notice that they don't have an "external appendage" like Dad or Brother.
     She desires a penis, and the power that it represents. Commonly young girls wonder when theirs will grow, and are devistated when they find out they wont get one.
She may develop a sexual desire for her father and blame her mother for her apparent castration.
Often women display signs of "penis envy" with a Garden Hose, by Spraying and Spraying, or by becoming obsessively attracted to large penises, or by feeling angry at men and in the most extreme case wanting to castrate them. Penis envy has been said to motivate women to seek men’s jobs, becoming firefighters, Marines, truck drivers, and boxers.
     Feminist psychoanalist Karen Horney decided to turn it around and develop the concept of "womb envy" to describe the condition of men who wish they could be life giving goddesses.

The Procedure
      We are pleased to announce that we are now offering the newest procedure in cosmetic surgery for men. This is a penile shaft enhancement procedure that is simple, safe and designed to increase both the LENGTH and CIRCUMFERENCE of the penile shaft.
     In the lengthening procedure, the doctor releases the suspensory ligaments safely with a laser and results generally range from 1-1/2" to 2." There is no way to predict what that length gain will be prior to surgery. Post-operative stretching is essential to success.
      The enlargement procedure involves a simple transfer of the patient's own fat cells. Because the penile shaft is narrower than the maximum diameter of the head, the doctor usually fills out the shaft slightly beyond head's maximum diameter.
      The risks are not high, but there are instances where patients do experience bleeding and bruising as well as swelling, but these are all temporary conditions. Other times there is a keloid scar that develops at the surgical site or a decrease in the upward position during erection. And in some instances the incisions on the skin separate and an infection develops. I suppose the greatest risk is that the patient will find that their penis is lacking in sensation and they develop erectile dysfunction.
       But overall, Penis enhancement surgery is a relatively safe, simple and performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia.

Bring on the Dick Debates!

   In preparation for Tantra Theater's big scripted summertime show entitled: Dick Dialogues, I've been praying, meditating and exploring my own practice of penis worship. When I went on tantric pilgrimage to mother India, nearly every temple contained a huge beautiful phallus which was decorated and celebrated on an hourly basis. However, most temples and teachers insisted the interpretation of the Shiva Lingam as a phallic symbol was a mistake, misnomer or even an act of blasphemy. Even wikpedia hosts a hot debate to disprove that the Shiva lingam is related to a deities dick.

As a middle path tantrika, I aim to practice beyond duality, and so the act of lingam worship is a celebration of BOTH the formless and the form. I've synthesized teachings from ancient tantric scriptures and took artistic lisence to dramatically interpret the following:

God is eternal, omnipresent, and formless.
Since it is hard to grasp abstract consciousness,
God gave us the form of shiva lingam for the benefit
of the tantric, hindu and shiva devotees,
he became this symbol so that we could practice
intimate devotion with the senses of our body.
The Sanskrit term Linga translates to symbol or sign.
Hence the Lingam or penis is a symbol of the all-auspicious universe.
It is a place where consciousness and form are both created and dissolved.
Since, according to Hinduism, it is the same god that creates, sustains and destroys the
universe, the Shiva Linga, represents both the material realm and the indivisible Supreme
Reality. Lingam worship is considered to be the highest form of worship.
It connects a devotee with the supreme consciousness of lord shiva.
Merging with the lingam in it's highest form is merging with the entire universe.
As such, sex is the most sacred form of worship, whether it's sensual or symbolic,
Thus, I say: do it, do it often, and do it with devotion.

Beltaine Birthday Goddess

This is me, after 35 B-day spankings on Beltane.
We had a juicy gathering with about 40 people at our monthly Sacred Snuggle Party. After a yummy vegetarian potluck we called in the 4 directions and lit a Beltane Fire to burn off the old and welcome in our new intentions for the more fertile Spring/summer months. Beltane is a tantric holiday in that it celebrates death and birth and sex and fertility. Traditionally this would be the time of the year when couples would pick their partners and renew their vows. They might jump over the fire to arouse fertility and go off into the corn fields to make love. This is a perfect evening to perform the great rite or Maithuna.
      On this night, my beloved of 8 years presented me with a crown of flowers (Hand picked from Janos & Sarah's garden.) After I was crowned the May Goddess, we practiced the Great Snuggle...which evolved into the great spanking lead by Mistress LN and Bodhi.

 Spanking can be a very sensual, vulnerable and even spiritual experience. One side effect I experienced was a focused mind and expanded heart. And though my eyes were often closed, I could actually tell who was spanking me, by their touch!
Personally, it was an deep and emotional ceremony for not only because of the scorpion full moon, but I am in the midst of a personal healing crisis. I usually take this month to get clear on my goals and priorities for the year. Let me take this opportunity to share my top three goals for the summer season:

1) WELL-BEING: I am vibrant and healthy as I enjoy my daily practice of movement, morning pages and prayer for at least 30 minutes. I am eating at least three fresh vegetarian meals per day, drinking my vitaminerals and taking regular breaks between each hour of work.

2) RELATIONSHIPS: I'm passionately in love with my husband and spending hot weekly date nights with him and other lovers while taking time to bond with my son and enjoy motherhood. My love overflows to share with the community at weekly classes, monthly potlucks, shows and special events.

3) CREATIVITY: I am having a blast directing a bonded collective of healers and performance artists in a monthly downtown show. Over 75 people show up monthly for entertainment and through their active participation, they come away with healing and enlightenment. The experience is valuable and transformative for all involved. Tantra Theater continues to grow online in videos, temples, conferences and festivals nationwide.

The preistess and the priest will go to the kindling prepared for the fire (if the rite is held outdoors) located near the Southern quarter of the circle. Otherwise, a candle within the cauldron is substituted. The priest will light the balefire as the following incantation is recited by the priestess:

At this point, the priest (or acting Satyr Lord) shall go to the altar and take up the garland-crown of flowers. He will then stand facing the priestess (or acting Maiden), lifting the crown above her head as he speaks the words of her coronation as the May Queen.

Crowning of the May Queen OR Floral Offering to The Goddess. The Satyr Lord:

vibrant Goddess of youth and sensuality;
Lady of Spring, exuberant Earth maiden,

Visioning for Tantra Palooza

Announcing the new line up of 10 national tantra teachers who will come together under ONE BIG TOP TENT at a gorgeous natural location in the hills of Escondido, CA called The Hidden Valley Retreat and Spa for Columbus day weekend (Oct. 8th Fri.-Mon. 11th.) This historic natural estate was originally devoted to health and healing and offers an 11-acre garden paradise with miles of rock lined walking trails, fountains, orchards, and gardens where our participants can enjoy the pool, spa, game room, hiking, and ofcourse hours of transformative tantra teaching. We're excited to be featuring: David Cates, Francoise Ginsberg, Jaiya Ma, Katie Weatherup, Kirin Khalsa, Liquid Bells, Reid Mihalko, Robert Silber and Shawn Roop. During the evenings we will have pujas, parties and performance art by San Diego tantra theater on the outdoor ampatheater under the oak trees. The retreat will be limited to 65 participants. What's Your Story?

This is the graduating class of Tantra Theater. We are now auditioning for the next 90 day journey. No experience is necessary. Infact, Kamala Devi prefers to work with newbies and novices than trained thespians. You must exhibit an open mind towards subjects of sexuality and spirituality, a flexibility and willingness to be directed, an positive orientation towards teamwork and stability in other areas of your life such as financial and relationship. In order to access your compatibility we invite you to attend an audition/open house where you can meet Kamala Devi and the rest of the cast and see if you resonate. Our next Open house is May 13th and the show will be called: Dick Dialogs.
What's your story? We invite you to explore your relationship with the lingam, penis or dick, oncamera or on stage. The journey involves at least 9 weekly rehearsals and a private session that culminate in a public showcase on Aug. 21st. And a video recording of 5-10 minutes of a polished performance which you can show your friends and lovers. This first gathering is an audition where Kamala Devi will access your willingness and you can see if you like Kamala's directing style. Course runs: 6:45pm on Thursdays Jan. 21st; Feb 4th,11th,18th; March 4th,11th,18th; and April 1st, 8th and 15th. If you are interested in performing in the Monthly Tantra Theater Improv Show, you must have graduated from at least one 90 day TT journey and attend two mandatory rehearsals prior to the show. Rehearsals are on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 6:45 at the Emerald Temple. We also have a 5pm Call time to rehearse before the actual show. We will hold one decompression and planning meeting for the cast and crew on the Last Thursday of the month at 6:45pm.
In order to become a part of the professional troupe you must have taken at least two tantra theater journeys and must be in frequent attendance at Tuesday's rehearsal and have performed in at least 3 professional shows. In extraordinary circumstances the director may make a powerful exceptions to the above rules, please discuss with Kamala if you cannot meet these agreements.

And the Golden Lingam Award goes to...

During each show, there is at least one player who shows up big. I mean really, really big. Someone who is pregnant with ideas, time and energy to contribute to the ensemble and the entire production. This is someone who is unconditionally supportive of everyone else, who handles their own work load and goes way beyond the call of duty to make the show a shimmering success. In many teams, drama classes, or theater troupes this person would be considered the most valuable player. And in the big leagues of acting their quality may even be recognized with a prestigious academy award. In Tantra Theater however, MVP stands for Most Vulnerable Player and we recognize them with the perpetual Golden Lingam Award. In Spring of 09 it was gifted to Janos Novak for building props and getting naked onstage, In Winter of 09 it went to Sara Murray Novak for painting backdrops and now, in Spring of 2010 it goes to...Michael McClure AKA Eco-Elf.

I know, I know, he's my husband. And as the director of Tantra Theater, I was reluctant to bestow this high honor on someone that I'm sleeping with. I didn't want to cause mutiny amongst the cast, but I'm sure they would all agree that he has produced more new material than everyone else put together. As a budding environmental comedian, he created over 15 minutes for the April show, another 20 minutes for earth day and a brand new 5 minute piece for the Shamanic Storytelling showcase. Not to mention, he rigged the lights, loaded and unloaded the entire set into his truck, and was the patron saint in funding the April show. Thank you Michael. We love you. And your toxic comedy makes us LOL! 
P.S. Can I borrow that award when your not using it?

Bee Medicine

       I stepped on a Bee at Earth-day. Michael sucked the stinger out of the sole (soul) of my left foot, but I couldn't sleep a wink last night. It happened right after leading a prayer circle to Mamma Earth, I was rushing off to our next performance. So I asked my Facebook friends: what do you think it means?
     Here are the responses I got:
Amrita Joy Ananda Ma the message from Bee is "BE" maybe the challenge is to be present even in the moment of rushing?...

Joy Nelson "Bees are the symbol of fertility and sexuality.
Its honeycomb, a hexagon, is the symbol of the heart and represents the sweetness of life found within our own heart. It is also the symbol of the sun and all its energies.
The bee reminds us to extract the honey of life and to make our lives fertile (productive) while the sun shines. No matter how great the dream is, there is the promise of fulfillment if we pursue our dreams....
If a Bee has shown up in your life, examine your own productivity. Are you doing all you can to make your life more fertile? Are you busy enough? Are you making time to savor the honey of life and not becoming a workaholic?
The Bee is the symbol of accomplishing the impossible. Aerodynamically, its body is too large for its wings and should not be able to fly. Although now we understand how it does fly (high rate of wing movement), the Bee remains a symbol of accomplishing anything you put your mind to.
In Hinduism, the Bee relates to Vishnu, Krishna or Kama, the God of Love. In Egypt, the Bee symbolized royalty. In Greece, it was the symbol of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The Celts associated the Bee with hidden wisdom."
This is the information I have about the bee as a totem animal...considering his impressionable grand entrance, take note of what you were doing at the time... what were you thinking, how were you feeling...at that exact moment... I would say there is a message there...

John McP It means ... watch where you're stepping, especially if you have bare feet! FWIW, a girl I dated got a little drunk and crazy on graduation night at her college, and was running around in bare feet, at night. Meanwhile, some of her fellow students were throwing glass bottles and breaking them. You can guess what happened. I spent part of that night pulling glass shards out of her bloody feet!

Shamanic Storytelling Showcase

We gathered for one season and through ritual and play we created the safety to share our stories, dreams, and visions. We got naked metaphorically, and literally and birthed this body of personal narratives. Today we invite you into our circle and ask that you breathe deep and see yourself in our performances.

The Showcase opened with An invocation by Ember. "Open Me up so I can Recieve, Open me up so I can Believe." One of our cast members was called away to be with her father during his transition to the other side. We dedicate this show to: Rita Mooney.

Shawn Roop shares his initation into tantra in a piece called: The gift of receiving.

Colibri performs her intiation into polyamory in a piece called: This changes everything.

One of the fundamental practices of the Shamanic path is soul retrieval. The next series of personal narratives are True stories that illustrate a variety of ways to reclaim our wholeness. Akasha Rose performs Recovery Room

Rae Newoman uses the shamanic tool of turning her wounds into art, music and song in her piece called Circumsision and then offers another ensamble piece called: Sister Gayles Ascension with the help of Shawn, Akasha, Michael and Colibri.

Another healing tool that the Shaman uses is art. I want to acknowledge Sister Sarah for painting this gorgeous backdrop.  Sarah Anchors the show with her final sexy act called: Billie Jean.

I love my Tantra Theater Cast!

After the show we offered a 30 minute Q & A which was like a delicious dessert after a special feast. 

I presented Tantra Theater's mock version of the academy award: The Golden Lingam Award to Michael McClure for being the most valuable player and special kudos to his work as Eco Elf.
