Reflections on 2011: Re-defining Family

Pod- noun. A small school or band of marine animals that play together, especially used to describe whales, seals and dolphins. (Not to be confused with an mp3 player, or the modern acronyms: Passed Out Drunk, Print On Demand or Payable On Death.)Dolphins are social creatures that swim with up to a dozen individuals for protection, hunting and mating. Sometimes Pods temporarily join others for a frenzy of food and play, forming a super-Pod.

2011 Kicked off with an orgasm! Our intimate lovers came together to celebrate and we've since been re-defining family, and calling ourselves a Pod.

As it applies to our polyamorous life, a pod is an tight group of friends who spend a lot of time together, sharing dreams, meals, inside jokes, and even lovers. (Sex is not exclusive or required among friends, but it is not frowned upon, either ;o) We gather weekly for brunch and Zegg style forum.

In Feb. we took our sexy social experiment to the Big Island of Hawai'i and co-created a mini-utopia for the release of James's Documentary. Upon returning to Pacific Beach, we had a new temple space converted from our garage, we shot a test pilot for a hollywood reality show and we talked about moving in together. Communal living has been an evolving conversation punctuated by monthly snuggle parties, play parties, naked movie nights, tantra talks, and poly potlucks.

In the Spring we made a magical connection with Modern Tantra Master Charles Muir and enjoyed sharing his pujas, privates and conscious loving weekend workshops. Followed by more romantic memories at Adam's annual trip to Canyon de Guadalupe in March. For my birthday, I took a trip to Cabo with my blood family and survived an electrifying experience in a jacuzzi at a day spa.

Between Tantra Theater's unforgettable production of the "Boho Show," and launching a provocative new holiday tradition called the "Sack-Religious Show," Michael started lessons for blues guitar and I performed at Bawdy Storytelling in LA then poured myself into writing and producing my one woman show. Streaming video now available on www.TantraTheater.TV The "Sacred Slut Series" was my single most important creation, next to giving birth.

Devin, age 4, loves marine biology and is excelling at his French emersion Pre-School and was unafraid to speak new languages on our month long European adventure.

We started off at Zegg, the Free Love commune, outside of Berlin. Staying in a tent, in the woods, in a rain storm. I immersed myself in raw emotional processing, contact dancing and video journaling, which was immensely healing during the loss of a deep love affair. After 10 days at Zegg, we met up with James and Jen in Berlin and went hiking in the picturesque hills of San Leonardo, drove race-cars at Kinder-land in the Italian Riviera and met up with Tahl for the last 10 days to outdo the sex clubs in Paris for Michael's birthday. The sleep, sex and dietary changes challenged the harmony of the pod, we endured some grueling processing, but in the end, Jen and I were sad to say goodbye to our new French Lover.

In the Fall, 3 peaceful tantra temples were raided by the Arizona police at gunpoint and about 30 tantra practitioners were wrongfully accused of prostitution, a number of them went to jail, and were held with unreasonable bails and are still facing felony charges. I threw myself into fundraising, activism and blogging in their support. It was an honor to serve the goddess with this cause, and the case is ongoing and needs our help. Go to www.templelife.tv Jen came with me to New York for the sacred sex round up and Arizona to help raise awareness with my one woman show. Then my grandfather died, though I couldn't be there to put him in the ground, I lead a Dia De Los Muertos ritual in his honor and am still saying goodbye in my own way.

The winter warmed up as my hot new romance with Roxanne developed and we played together with the "SuperPod" at Tantra Palooza on 11-11-11. Despite the rain and plumbing problems, 5 transformative days with 11 teachers re-ignigted my dreams of living in a creative and sustainable sex-positive cooperative. For Thanksgiving, Devin got pole dancing lesson, and a private ski lesson in Big Bear for Christmas. On New Years Eve we installed our new Fu Dogs to energized our intentions for a wildly successful reality show which we plan to start as early as February.

I'm wishing you and abundance of Love, creativity, authentcity and Freedom in 2012!!

Blessed Be.

Sexy Solstice Sutras 2011

The following Sack-Religious aphorisms are from my forthcoming book: Sacred Sex Sutras. All rights reserved by Kamala Devi

ON SEX
*What if: when I'm tired…I sleep. When I'm hungry…I eat. And when I'm horny…
*You know you've got the goddess when a simple 'Namaste' knocks her bindi off.
*I will not worship false idols. And I know they are false if they are too 'holy' to fuck.
*I marvel at the softness of your skin and how it manages to contain your boundless spirit.
*I thank God for the insatiable longing between my legs, for offers depth to all my spiritual seeking.
*I'm not attracted to a certain type or size of any particular body part, but those that embody the whole.
*Being a master lover isn't a function of knowing any particular moves, but a willingness to make them up as you go along.
*Your touch instantly accelerates my heartbeat; but a strangely, a strategically placed kiss can suspend me to something slower than a stop.
*I'm committed to diminishing the gap between how awkwardly we fumble into each-other in the flesh and how effortlessly we merge in my fantasies.
*The wise Priestess does not indulge in sex to compensate for church's perverted repression, but restores prayer to it's rightful place in sexual congress.

ON LIFE & SPIRIT
*My non-dual directive: Know Shiva. Embody Shakti.
*In opening my awareness to all that is deserving of gratitude, I realize how much I'm still taking for granted.
*It's impossible to understand the dance, unless you're in it, and even then, you may only know what moves you.
*I step outside my temple, after worship, and amongst all the shoes of other seekers, I forget which ones are mine.
*I would rather risk your horrified rejection by revealing my naked core than stay safely bundled in the arms of your uninformed acceptance.
*There is a whole sequence of steps between serving at the foot of the divine, and dancing around in her shoes, which involve a great deal of fumbling around.

ON POLY
*More love, less jealousy.
*I haven't lost a boyfriend, but gained a girlfriend.
*Why yes, I am flirting with you, and your lovely wife too.
*If there was such a thing as cooties, everyone would have gotten them from me by now.
*Is it still called "NRE" (New Relationship Energy), when it's with my husband of 10 years?
*My girlfriend says that if her boyfriend ever broke up with her she would cry between my legs.
*My lover is so poly that she brings a power-strip to a coffee shop when she's going to write on her computer.
*Trying to date a monogamous person, for me, is like trying to stuff my three prong plug into a two prong outlet--it just ain't gonna fit!
*Even the minister said, when he was joining my husband and I in marriage, if your wedding vows involve forsaking all others, I object.
*I didn't give up my security for free love, I just gave up the illusion that my security comes from being the only person who can bring my partner(s) sexual pleasure.
*There is nothing wrong with being straight and monogamous, as long as you inquire deeply and define your own truth as much as those of us who are not in the norm.
*My girlfriend looks me in the eyes and tells me I'm the One, she probably said the exact same thing to her boyfriend just moments ago, but I know she only speaks the truth.
*When my mother first heard about my lifestyle she said: You've such a hog. Do you know how many women can't get a date on a Friday night, and look at you, you have three!?
*Undivided attention on a single lover is a gift indeed! Once mastered, sustaining simultaneous attention on multiple lovers provides deeper degrees of practice in loving as God loves.
*You may deem me deviant for openly sharing my heart and body with as many people as I please, but until you can prove there's pleasure in conforming, deviance works fine for me.
*Oh No! We can't let gays get married. What's next? People will start wanting to marry multiple partners. Annie Sprinkle's response: Or the EArth, or the sea, or the moon! Lets prove them right! Occupy marriage!
*When a monogamous couple suffers a break up, people don't blame monogamy-- they give condolences and are sensitive to a mourning period before saying, "there are other fish in the sea." When a poly person breaks up, (which rarely happens because they usually just include new lovers and/or transition into best friends,) people can't wait to say, "I told you so" and "isn't it time you got serious and settled down?"

ON ART
*Ever notice how objects come alive when observed?
*If reality is what you make of it, what do you make of reality TV?
*WARNING: Some maps are seductively more real seeming than the territory.
*A writer must live off the page first, if they have any hopes of coming alive on it.
*At some point in the play--every performer gets to play God. The question is whether or not they are acting.
*I have 3 primary spiritual practices: Breathing, loving and Writing. My definition of "primary" is that I'm never not doing it. (By this definition, I also have 3 "primary" lovers.)

ON LOVE
*I've been withholding this, for fear it might sound cliche' but the truth is: I LOVE YOU.
*I thought you'd built a wall around your heart until I felt around a bit and discovered a doorknob.
*Those of us who are on the planet to teach LOVE, must first contend with the FEAR that comes up for the healing.
*Elevating the beloved may add exciting new dimensions to the relationship, but after suffering so many falls from the pedestal, I'm afraid of heights.
*Evidently, you've blinded me to the difference between being madly in love and truly in love, but I couldn't have a more legitimate alibi.
*I used to get upset when my lovers didn't automatically know what's on my mind-- until I fell for you--now I'm starting to value the privacy of my own thoughts.

HEARTBREAK
*Our love was once otherworldly, now we're worlds apart.
*You say you still love me, and that's sweet, but I am still IN love with you.
*When our loved ones are hurting, can we find solace, comfort and wonder in mysterious mechanism that allow us to actually feel their hurt?
*Usually when I'm feeling blue, it colors everything. Lips and roses turn a certain shade of purple. But this grief is so pure, it won't even mix with other experiences.

ON DEATH
*I haven't died, (at least not in this lifetime) but when I do, I expect the gateway to heaven to looks like your inner thighs.
*If death is anything like sleep, there is nothing to fear. But if first there Is a bardo, made up of mind, our cultural panic is justified.
*Am I sick for contemplating this, or is society sick for putting hairspray and make-up on the dead?

ON MOTHERHOOD
*DEVIN (4): Jesus Christ is just like Bob the Builder because they both make cabinets.
*DEVIN (4): Ouch. Mom, Next time I feed you something can you wait until I pull my fingers out of your mouth before you bite down?
*I'm grateful to have this bright young being temporarily in my custody, but I have no illusions that he belongs to anyone but the Universe.
*Upon hearing that a vampires used to be normal people who were bit by vampires, Devin naturally wants to know who the first vampire was.
*Devin (4) got fruit from his Trick-or-Treat bag and says: "Sometimes red apples have yellow in them, and it makes them look like an explosion!"
*My blinding impulse towards parenthood is motivated as much by my need to compensate for a dysfunctional childhood as it is curiosity of how God must feel.
*DEVIN(4): The neighbors must be crazy, they have their pumpkin out and it's already December.
ME: So do we honey.
DEVIN: Mom, next month is my birthday and I want you to bake me a cake. This time I want you to make the outside brown so it looks like the earth and we can put animals on it like worms and snails and other bugs.
ME: where did you get that idea?
Devin: I thought it up myself. It's a great idea, I've been thinking about it for a whole year, since my last birthday.

ON PROCESSING/COMPETITION/LACK
*When somebody wants the same thing I want-- and is better at attaining it-- I can chose to see them as competition, or as my teacher.
*Processing is like sex; it can be passionate, vulnerable, addictive and depending on your skill the outcome is either satisfying or frustrating.
*I'm cultivating compassion for the ego's compulsive need to compare, for deep in our lizard brain, we still think our survival depends on being the fittest.
*I am hereby quitting my bad habit of not asking for fear that you'll say no, or worse yet, that you'll say yes, but really mean no. Can I trust you to take care of yourself?

ON REVOLUTION
*This Thanksgiving: Save a turkey; eat a beaver!
*As an American Citizen, I live in a constant state of culture shock.
*If the earth, trees and animals could 'occupy' what would their signs say?
*If my sole power depended on persuading people they are not capable of a direct connection with the divine, could I too be corrupted enough to raid the goddess temples and put priestesses in prison?
*Most radical free thinking visionaries are such contrarians that they typically wont align with any massive social movements, but the unifying rally cry of
Occupy suggests that those who oppose their stance are conforming with the greedy 1%.

Sack-Religious Show Cliff Notes

We had over 200 participants gather to experience Tantra Theater's holiday show on Dec 8 and 9th at Queen Bee's Art and Culture Center in Northpark.
1) Sister Superior warmed up the audience with an invocation and short sexy sermon.

2) Father Michael inspired "Confessions" by the entire ensemble of writer/performers: Adam, Chris, Coby, Jenn, Nate, Katie and Monique.
3) Michael played an original Song about creation: "Brahma the great creator."
4) Monique shares a deep personal narrative about her tantric awakening and how she become a tantric facilitator after growing up in conservative Utah.
5) Michael offers a dramatic interpretation of "Jesus was way Cool" by King Missile.
6) Adam does Stand up comedy as "Jesus Christ" doing hands on healing and teaching us not only to love one another, but to make love to one another.
7) In this spectacular song and dance number Chris shares about how hard (or not hard) it is to get an erection at his first tantric play party.
INTERMISSION We announce the VIP after party with Naked Butlers!
Special Thanks to Sabrina, Cheri, Bodhi, Manx, Roxanne and Ellen for your Sexy Service!

8) Katie shows us how she fell in love with a foul mouth innocent (played by Jenn) who dared to ask the question: Why did Jesus have to die? Why can't god forgive our sins without a blood sacrifice?
9) Nate rewrites his relationship to self pleasuring using rope as a metaphor for how he's been trapped in his own prison, he untangles himself from his programming and redefines sexual sin as Shame.

10) Coby explores a dark fantasy based on the question: what kind of a twisted perverted bitch hires a prostitute in Vegas on Christmas eve? Or worse yet, IS a prostitute?

11) Michael plays "Satan was way cool" by Beck and then introduces the audience to our version of Hell.

12) Jenn leads the cast in a sensual lap dance to "Devil Inside" by Inxs.

Why I hate the Holidays:

After Black Friday, every year, I pack up for a holiday retreat...which usually involves leaving the civilized western world to get the hell away from the comercial temptation to shop for stupid stocking stuffers and sugar cookies.  Having been raised by wrathful and guilt-ridden Jewish & Catholic parents, I have a double dose of disdain for the overblown religiosity of the season.

Recently, as the mother of a bright eyed 4 year old boy, who's birthday falls in the midst of all the holiday madness...I've come to realize that it's not all about me. (Imagine that!)  Perhaps there's something more. Something even deeper for me to explore...?

But how can I bear to wear ugly sweaters drink egg-nog and maintain my  Ba-humbug-I'm too sexy for the Grinch like attitude?  I'm curious. Really. I want to know what a true tantric christmas looks like.

This year, instead of running away, I'm staying in San Diego to face my demons.  Better yet, I'm going to cover myself in plum pudding and wrestle the dreaded Santa Beast myself. (Ho! Ho! Ho!) Who wants to watch?

Tantra Theater is producing a spectacularly naughty little production called "The Sack-Religious Show"  with 9 talented performance artists who are willing to get emotionally naked onstage. We each have a diverse degree of religious damage that we are willing to divulge for your entertainment and enlightenment.  Add spice to your holiday season with this radical variety show we celebrate our religious freedom and right to free speech with music, dance, song, and comedy about sex and spirit.

This has nothing to do with me:

....I think the biggest crime
is just to throw up your hands and say
this has nothing to do with me
I just want to live as comfortably as I can....

I got friends all over this country
I got friends in other countries too
I got friends I haven't met yet
I got friends I never knew
I got lovers whose eyes
I've only seen at a glance
I got strangers for great grandchildren
I got strangers for ancestors

...you've got your whole life
to do something
and that's not very long
so why don't you give me a call
when you're willing to fight
for what you think is real
for what you think is right

Sweet Nothings (Fall Equinox status updates 2011)

I am collecting little slivers of wisdom. These lines are crystallizations of my mediation, lovemaking and irreverent conversations with lovers. They show up like thorns in my fingertip that insist on being plucked out and passed around.  I intend to publish them in a bed-side book with the working title: Tantra Sutras by Kamala Devi

ON GOD/GODDESS
  • After a long dry journey, this droplet of water is returning to mamma ocean.
  • When I close my eyes, I see God; when I open my eyes, she's still there, just in disguise.
  • Most all of human challenges stem from squishing this infinite unconditional love into this limited mortal flesh and form.
  • Somewhere behind those sleepy eyes, there's a spark of something sublime, to which I am eternally in service.
  • The devil took one hard look at me, and then put his tail between his legs. ;o)
  • God is my enemy. And, as with most statements about the absolute, the converse is equally and simultaneously true.
ON LOVE
  • It's no longer a surprise that I can fall deeply, truly, madly in LOVE in just one night--I just wonder why I don't do it every day.
  • For as much as I romanticize following the unreasonable path of the heart, my most devastating mistakes usually result from allowing my head and heart travel too far from each other.
  • I recognize myself in you, not just in the field of fusion where we are all connected, but in your unique way towards it.
  • Making love doesn't just happen between the sheets, but when you stop what you're doing to greet your beloved at the door, speak into the uncomfortable, call them for no reason, and thoughtfully put the toothpaste cap back on the tube.

ON HEARTBREAK
  • My love does not wash away, no matter how many tears I shed, it just glistens more when wet.
  • When your heart feels like it's ripping into tiny pieces--Look at it this way, you now have more surface space to spread around.
  • The trouble with being a transpersonal channel is that you love with all the hearts that ever loved, but you may also hurt that way.
  • He kissed me goodbye and before my train pulls away from the platform he said: we may never see each other again, but we may never leave each other, either.
  • Our relationship is deeply personal and widely transpersonal. Now the trick to breaking up is simply untangling the personal.
  • My bod functions like an antenna, sensitive to the love of all those within my frequency. Missing you has expanded my range of receptivity.
  • What does my wounded little girl need to heal in order to show up full and savor the truth of where we meet?
  • Rebound is the act of rubbing the sensitive new pieces of your heart against someone who cares.
  • In truth, I never left you. My body may be somewhere else, most likely with somebody else, but ultimately parting is not possible.
  • To withhold love-- for fear of hurt is as absurd as choosing not to live-- because inevitably we all die.

ON SEX
  • Stop teasing me with love, to get sex, and I'll stop teasing you with sex, to get love.
  • There is music under your skin, I can hear it with my tongue.
  • Beyond all words and concepts, our bodies know how to further the conversation.
  • I Just had the most profound orgasm…too bad no one was around to witness it.
  • Celebrate sex as if it were your cause-- in fact, it is the cause of everybody.
  • Make love to me: together we'll shape-shift, gender-bend, time-travel and be.
  • Fingernails are fun for tickling and scratching, but I prefer short nails for penetration purposes.
  • Sex with you is like dessert, our connection is so full and complete, that it is unnecessary, but still irresistible.
  • What did you say? I can't hear the subtle expression of your body language with all those clothes on.
ON ART
  • I am an artist. My medium is love. And like most creative genius's my art is misunderstood.
  • I'm having life experiences that go beyond any frame of reference I've ever known, yet they're still worth framing.
  • At the beginning of each rehearsal, I pray to step aside and let myself come through.
  • I'm supposed to be finishing my script, but ended up making love all day. It's funny how some forms of procrastination are easier to forgive than others.
  • Art imitates nature. My creativity moves like the ocean. I'm retreating and gathering inspiration before surging forth with another powerful creation.
  • I found buying a vinyl blow-up doll as a prop for tantra theater offensive, until I had to find a metal speculum for my Sacred Slut Show.
  • Is this monkey mind, or is the muse whispering instructions into my ear for my next book?
ON SELF INQUIRY
  • In the crystal moments when you see me without projection, that is when I see myself most clearly.
  • I'm most myself when I'm making love, otherwise I'm just faking it, the good news is that I'm making love most all of the time, now.
  • I know. I know, I'm not as beautiful, wise, sexy or even as vain as I think I am.
  • I am a perpetual mystery to myself.
  • I'm officially done being self indulgent, now I'm up in everyone else's business.
ON TANTRA
  • Sacred sex is a great way to start the day, although, by the time we get out of bed, it's already evening.
  • Why is it acceptable to drop to my knees in prayer, but all other positions I use to worship the divine are not allowed in polite society?
  • There is a mountain top where ascendant masters hang out, laugh and make love. I used to think it was a myth or a metaphor, but after being with you, I know, it's real.
  • In Alchemy, fire is the agent of change, but the adept is warned never to let the flame get too hot. There is a parallel principle in sacred sexuality, thus the insistence on slow foreplay.
  • Your devotion arouses my desire.
  • Waking reality is extended worship. Every interaction is a puja station. Starting with solo practice in the shower, feeding the inner child breakfast, dancing with Shakti in the office to meeting Shiva in the bedroom.
ON POLY
  • There's enough of me to go around.
  • Relationship is my religion. (and I'm polytheistic.)
  • Polyamory is the new gay.
  • Mono/poly relationship is a game of risk.
  • 'I'm Not Polyamorous But All Of My Lovers Are.'
  • The love between us is inherently unique, and made even more special by sharing it with others.
  • The programming and explosion of nuclear households in modern society has caused farther reaching toxic devastation than any bomb.
  • One of the rarely celebrated benefits of being poly is that when your suffering from a tender heartbreak, one (or two) of your other lovers can listen, hold you, and love you through it.
  • Polyamory has lead me nowhere near the path of least resistance.
  • I am stripping you down of all my projections and loving you, naked (and your girlfriend too.)
  • Happiness in polyamory hinges on ones ability to add and multiply their love instead of dividing and subtracting.
  • Monogamy is a conspicuous and crumbling conspiracy.
  • In essence, Free Love is the spiritual practice of loving the One through the many.

ON COMMUNICATION
  • Why don't you just ask me about my love life to begin with, because all other conversations we try to start are going to end up there, anyway.
  • By definition, "process' is always incomplete.
  • There's a fine line between practicing transparency and not having the ability to censor yourself, but real friends don't mind when you cross that line.
  • Am I one of those people who talks about "no drama" in relationship, while indulging in a inordinate amounts of it?

ON REVOLUTION
  • Hey, who do I have to fuck around here to get some world peace? I mean, Sheesh.
  • Conditioned in a culture of violence, I've become so intent on stopping the suffering, that I've lost site of my ability to befriend it.
  • For most people, sexual liberation is going to take a revolution. For the rest us, it requires a revelation.
  • When offered a pleasurable growth opportunity, the natural impulse to pull away from pain becomes obvious. Liberation lies not in leaning towards or away from this impulse, but in knowing we're always at choice.
  • What magic is possible, if at the time of the hunt, instead scattering and denying our craft, we witches ban together and practice with all of our heart?
  • My prison walls may be constructed by conditioned cognitive misperceptions, but the doorway is clearly made of something beyond mind-stuff.
  • I am an activist. It's my mission to activate the security and freedom inscribed within our bodies, from a time before our sensual and religious practices were separated or persecuted. Who wants to activate with me?
On Life
  • Reality is squishy, isn't it?
  • I'm finally starting to appreciate the wisdom of the long lingering goodbye. Why rush it, when in fact, it is what we've all been doing since our arrival on earth?
  • Stillness in the manifest world is an illusion. We exist on a planet that is revolving around a sun which is also moving. Thus I center myself in the flow of my emotions. Who I am is in constant flux.

ON TRAVEL
  • Travel is a prescription to break us of our habits, get perspective on our problems and turn the foreign into family.
  • I went to several Salavador Dali Museums and came away thinking: "The only difference between me and a madman is that I'm not a man."
  • In Germany I'm told, Tantra is Pointless. (Perhaps something is lost in Translation.)
  • In Paris men walk around swinging their baguettes so shamelessly by their hips, it's a wonder they don't get baguette envy.
  • The walls around my heart are crumbling down-- East Germany having this affect on me.
  • Leisure is big secret weapon that the European have over Americans

ECO-SEXUALITY
  • She brings me flowers, she bears me fruit, she massages my feet, and holds me tirelessly in her arms of gravity.
  • When I have excess sexual energy amping in my body the only remedy is to hug a tree.
  • We are pimps for pumping her full of plastic, covering her skin with concrete, bulldozing down her pulmonary branches and  are selling her blood for $4 a gallon.
  • Hugging a tree is similar to hugging a human, you can give love, receive love or simply make love.
  • In the beginning, night fell on top of daylight and made such passionate love that colors soaked the sky. Twilight was so good that they agree to do it again, every day, at sunrise and sunset, for eternity.
